This might sound like a hoary story but we like it anyway.........in 1955 Abbot Pederson, an ambitious salesman working for the Munsingwear underwear factory, goes to a bar in New York to kill some time before his flight home. He leaves the bar "three sheets", passes a Taxidermist and purchases a stuffed penguin, as you do. He takes Pete the Penguin on plane, drinks some more and accidentally knocks his head off. Wrapping his bow tie round Pete's neck to keep his head on, the stewardess jokes that Pete is so dapper he should be immortalised. Thus, in 1955, the Munsingwear golf shirt was born and a Penguin with a bow tie became an icon. Original Penguin is to this day as fine a representation of cool Americana as you're likely to get.
